The Supreme State Audit Institution of Albania (ALSAI) participated in the EUROSAI Working Group on Environmental Auditing (EWGEA) Spring Session 2026, one of the leading forums for technical cooperation among European Supreme Audit Institutions (SAIs) in the field of environmental auditing and sustainability.

The meeting was organized in Madrid by the Spanish Court of Audit, in cooperation with the Supreme Audit Office of Poland, which chaired the EUROSAI Working Group on Environmental Auditing. The event brought together more than 50 experts from 25 countries, reflecting a strong international participation.

During the three-day session, held from 19 to 21 May 2026, participants discussed emerging technologies that are transforming public environmental auditing. The discussions focused on innovative approaches and digital tools that support auditors in assessing environmental policies, sustainability initiatives, and climate-related challenges more effectively.

The purpose of the study visit was to exchange experiences on geospatial data and the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in environmental audits, while exploring the potential of tools such as satellite observation, drones, and AI technologies. The discussions focused on strengthening the audit of policies related to sustainability, climate change, biodiversity, and natural resource management.

During the study sessions, representatives from European Supreme Audit Institutions, the European Space Agency (ESA), the European Court of Auditors, INTOSAI WGEA, and other international organizations, together with the Office for Climate Change of the Ministry for Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge, shared experiences on the use of geospatial data, artificial intelligence, and innovative methodologies applied in environmental auditing. Participants also presented practical case studies demonstrating the application of these tools in real audit engagements.

The EWGEA Spring Session 2026 provided an important platform for technical cooperation and the exchange of best practices among Supreme Audit Institutions (SAIs) within the EUROSAI region, fostering the development of more innovative and better-equipped public audits capable of addressing increasingly complex environmental challenges.
